Import of the word/rtf document with proper structure

Hello All,

I did try to import my customer requirements which is word to DOORS by converting to.rtf.

But when I did all the tables are not having proper format and they are converted to each object in the table cell.

Is there any easiest way to do an import from WORD, I searched for some DXL script but of no help.

Any help is appreciated.

Word tables are imported as DOORS tables, whether you do the export from Word or import as RTF.

If you want something else, you can convert the Word tables to OLEs, see https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=20721326-f4c4-4282-ad96-b2910a3f22f5

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Please suggest the best way because I want to export 50 word documents with the proper structure.

in my experience, importing word documents with the correct structure, pictures, tables etc. is rarely a trivial task. Often, you will have to do some imports, find out the specific problems, and do a combination of adopting the Word documents, e.g. by using Macros, before the import and adopting the module after the import, sometimes with DXL. Some tasks may have to be done manually (copy/paste of tables instead of Import). Sometimes you will have to do both: import from RTF and export from Word and combine the results.

Take yourself some time for the first document until you are satisfied with the result and hope that the other 49 documents can be treated in the same way.

I said it's usually not trivial at all :) Depending on the specific problems you encounter and the quality of the result you expect, it might happen that you have to spend several hours or even days for each document.

There no official easiest way, it all depends on the structure and the content of your word document. You have two ways of getting data from Windows to DOORS, one being the "Export to Rational DOORS" Button in your MS Word application (push), the other one is save document as RTF and import from RTF (pull). Compare the results and solve the issues that you get, perhaps merge the results using DXL. It has been some years that I had do to this task, but I don't remember that pictures have been much of a problem. Captions to pictures were more difficult (we solved this specific by removing all picture captions in the document before the export using some VBA macro). Document structure has been a problem, this has been solved by correcting the outline information in the original document.

Hello Mike,

I have added the Export to DOORS, also followed the instructions mentioned in other post on EXPORT to DOORS.

Currently I have launched both WORD and DOORS as an Admin, but I am getting the following error(Attached).

Regards

I am not sure, but the problem might be that DOORS has not installed itself correctly as an OLE server. I know that this was (or still is??) a problem with the installation routine of the DOORS client.

There are some threads about OLE server in this forum, e.g. https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=c5154866-d0ec-4900-906d-a4c532fc11a4 looks promising.

What I remember about this topic is:

- it might help if you start the DOORS client once(!) with elevated access rights, so, click on the DOORS client icon with the right mouse button and choose "Run as administrator" (you even need to do this if the currently logged in user has admin rights). Afterwards close DOORS client and Word and restart Word with your normal user, it does not need to be an administrator.

- this setting will not work in Citrix mode, as in Citrix, Word cannot communicate with other processes.

Hope this helps, if not, have a look at the other posts you find in the forum search about these topics.
